這首歌是民謠詩人唐麥克林最著名的創作之一，講的是著名的荷蘭畫家文生˙梵谷的故事。歌詞的第一句：Starry, starry night，便是引用梵谷的畫作「星夜」的名稱，歌曲中許多的歌詞也都是在描述梵谷畫中的景象。

這首「Vincent」據說在荷蘭的梵谷紀念館中，長年不斷的播放著，.......................

文生27歲時才開始繪畫， 係短短十年間, 繪畫了八佰多幅油畫及同等數目的素描, 卻幾乎從未能覓得買家, 只能長期依賴弟弟德奧 (Theo) 在經濟上和精神上的支持。

1889年，在與高更一次爭吵之後，梵谷精神分裂症複發而割下了自己的左耳，並用手帕包起後送與一名妓女。之後於5月8日自願前往阿爾勒聖雷米的一家精神病院治療，在那駐留了108天。在入住精神病院期間，梵谷創作了大量的繪畫作品，共計一百五十多幅油畫和一百多幅素描。在此階段的繪畫，梵谷的畫風開始趨向於表現主義，作品充滿憂鬱精神和悲劇性幻覺，其中作品《星夜》正是其中代表之一。^[1]而作品《星夜》是在醫生允許梵谷白天可以外出的條件下所創作，而其作品的所描述的風景也正是精神病院所在地聖雷米。
