「人」在此是指所思念的人。蘇軾作此詞想的是蘇轍（子由）。兩句釋意為：我只希望人兒能夠永遠長久平安，即使各在千里之外，也能共賞著天上美麗的嬋娟（月亮）。

是對遠方親友的懷念，也是對所惦念的人兒的祝福─祝福伊一切美好平安。

 此詞雖為懷念子由，亦感傷自己的身世。兄弟分別已久，客居異鄉，「每逢佳節倍思親」。對天仰問「明月幾時有」，充滿了詩人嘆息之意。除此，仍深感人生際遇無常，世事難料，無法卜之。

「乘風歸去」似陶潛和莊子的飄逸境界，尤覺空靈蘊藉，充滿了道家思想。東坡之豁達胸襟，開闊的氣派，果然是「豪放派」的代表人物。詞中沒有華麗的字眼，亦沒有婉約的氣息。詩人則以平淡不起眼的字，組成千古雋永的詞，實在是佳品。

因此，後人除將此列為「豪放」代表作外，亦列為「清麗」、「雄偉」之代表作。在《水調歌頭》中，他想象一個如天國的生活地方，這亦表現出他對現實世界的無可奈何及嚮往一個理想的世界‧
「人有悲歡離合，月有陰晴圓缺，此事古難全。但願人長久，千里共嬋娟」亦顯示了作者身經百戰後的得著，看透了世事變遷後的出世思想。

月圓月缺，年年中秋。每逢這個佳節，總有人吟誦「明月幾時有，把酒問青天」。在東坡的這首中秋詞中，包含著多麼深的人生感慨和企盼：「但願人長久，千里共蟬娟！」是東坡有感而發之句。
常有奇妙的比喻和對人生、對宇宙的真知灼見，理趣橫生。
